Girl With Black

Shorts The Chelsea Hotel is a New York City icon – ever wondered who lives in it? A portrait of the artist Bettina, one of New York's last true eccentrics. Shorts Girl with Black Balloons is no ordinary character study but a multi-faceted portrait of Bettina – a reclusive, artist living within the confines of Manhattan’s legendary lodgings: The Chelsea Hotel. Reflexive and tender, the film develops a dialogue between filmmaker and subject born out of mutual respect, blurring the roles of confidante and muse. The result provides a fascinating insight into a unique life and graceful meditation on the powers of memory, creativity, order and discord. We are very proud to announce that Girl with Black Balloons will have its World Premiere at The Edinburgh International Film festival 2010 http://www.edfilmfest.org.uk/whats-on/2010/girl-with-black-balloons and that's where YOU come into the story! I have been making this documentary film in the most independent way imaginable: all by myself for little to no budget. Thanks to the fact that I didn't have any crew members - just me and my camera - and thanks to free Heineken and free equipment from my graduate school! After a period of two years of shooting, I realized this project could be more than just a student film... I decided it was time to start working with an editor to create a story that has never been told. I have been very lucky to work with an amazing editor who was so charmed by the material that she decided to work for ... well for just a fraction of her normal rate! Two years have passed, and we are taken by surprise, the film will actually have it's world premiere in Edinburgh this summer (and just for those of you who are not so familiar with the film festivals, this is a BIG ONE!), thanks to all the hard work, love and endless dedication of both my editor and co-producer Laura Minnear and myself. Wow, we are so proud the film has come to life! And hopefully it will start to lead a life of its own. The dilemma now is that finishing a film requires so much technical expertise just to be able to put it on the big screen, that many films can't even afford to participate in these kind of festivals. This is why we are asking for your help. I look at this festival as a chance to unveil Bettina's life in the hopes that she will get further exposure. It is also a way to make my first feature length film known to the outside world and hopefully create opportunities that might not be possible otherwise. And to make this happen we humbly ask you for a donation. Even 20 dollars will help. This money is going towards a final sound mix, a color correction, a festival grade edit, graphic animation, final print & output to HD, final musical score and the creation of promotional materials and DVD's. We've been so lucky to be able to find professionals who are giving us deep discounts because they too believe in the project and want to see it get out into the world. Some of you have been to a private screening at the the School of Visual Arts theater in New York, the Netherlands Club or at the small theater 'De Uitkijk' I rented in Amsterdam and are probably wondering; Wasn't it already finished? The simple answer is that Industry, Press and Broadcasters have certain technical requirements and if we don't meet those, the film will stay in one of my 'boxes' and never be seen by anyone else but family and friends. But due to all the extra work, the film will actually feel different and we are sure will come to life in a much more vibrant and intimate way than before. The amount we are trying to get together is $ 7000,-. We have set a goal of doing this in 30 days. The way Kickstarter works is that if we don't raise all of the money in 30 days, then the money you have pledged will not be charged. Check out all the goodies we are offering! We thank you so much your support in helping 'Girl with Black Balloons' get out into the world. Girl with Black Balloons

Directed by Corinne van der Borch. With Bettina. In the stairwell of the legendary Chelsea Hotel, Dutch filmmaker Corinne van der Borch stumbles upon an ornery elderly resident named Bettina, living in the shadows. Over decades Bettina has surrounded herself with boxes stacked from floor to ceiling, filled with works of her art that never left her studio. She sleeps on a lawn-chair, and dreams of her own museum, while the sediments of her life ...
